How to change guitar strings
Before starting, make sure you have the necessary tools on hand. Most importantly, you'll need a new set of strings. Other essential tools include a string winder/cutter, pliers, a tuning device, and a cloth to clean the fretboard. In some cases, you might also need a small screwdriver or Allen wrench.
Loosen each string one-by-one using the tuning pegs. Once the strings are loosened, you can cut them in half using your string cutter for easier removal. However, some guitarists prefer to unwind each string fully from the tuning peg. Be careful not to damage the guitar's finish with the loose, sharp end of the string. After cutting or unwinding the string, you can remove it from both the bridge and the headstock.
With the strings off, now is the perfect time to give your guitar a good clean. Use a dry, clean cloth to wipe away any dust or grime on the fretboard and body of the guitar. If your fretboard is looking particularly dirty, consider using a dedicated fretboard cleaner.
Start with the low E string (or whichever string your guitar's particular string order dictates). Feed the string through the corresponding hole in the bridge. Take the other end of the string and pass it through the hole in the tuning peg, ensuring you're following the direction of the other strings on the headstock. Use your string winder to turn the tuning peg, and make sure the string wraps neatly around the peg as it tightens. Repeat this process with the remaining strings.
After installing all the new strings, use your tuner to bring them pitch. Stretching the strings helps to keep them in tune; gently pull each string away from the guitar a few times and retune. Repeat this process until the string stays in tune after stretching.
